DSNZPARM ANALYSIS

Describe gives DB2 DBAs and System Programmers the ability to identify the existing DSNZPARM settings in a DB2 subsystem just like Visual Explain. However, unlike Visual Explain, it also provides the ability to save and compare versions of DB2 subsystem settings.

Describe is written in Java and the source code is provided. Registered users will receive updates to the code. This is an opportunity to get a working example of a Java GUI program running on a Windows client that calls a DB2 stored procedure on the mainframe.

Describe is freeware. There is no cost to the end user or his/her organization. Describe is supplied with the Java code. The user may either download with or without the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Describe with an embedded Java runtime (version 5 (1.5)) has been tested on Microsoft Windows® ME/XP/2000 and is included in the install program. Describe without the embedded runtime requires a preinstalled JRE or Java Software Developers Toolkit (JDK) on the client where it is used. For Windows® Vista users, we recommend downloading and installing JDK/JRE version 6 (1.6) for best results.

IBM's DB2 Connect client is currently required in order to provide a JDBC connection to the mainframe due to IBM licensing requirements. Beyond this, there are no additional costs for this program from HLS Technologies.

As noted above, Describe mimics the DSNZPARM function provided in Visual Explain. The program provides the same display options by Parameters, Install Fields and Install Panels. The value for each DSNZPARM is displayed, as are the Install Field, the Install Panel, the Macro, and the Parameter. A description of what the value means is also provided. We don't believe you'll find a better set of definitions for these parameters in the DB2 Info Center or in Visual Explain combined.
